　Photographs from his book ‘ For These Naked Apologies ’

 

 

 

 

 

　吉永マサユキは、８年間にわたって撮影された「暴走族」シリーズや、「ゴスロリ」と呼ば

　れるコスプレのティーンエイジャーなどの写真で知られ、日本では森美術館や横浜美術館、

　またニューヨークやロンドンの美術館でも多数展示されている写真家です。当ギャラリーで

　の初個展となる今展は、2000年に出版された吉永の故郷である大阪十三の人々を撮った写真

　集、「申し訳ございません」に掲載された写真を展示致します。

 

　水商売や肉体労働に従事する人々、ニューハーフや不良たち。十三における様々な人間模様

　を写した写真集「申し訳ございません」は、日本の社会で少数派として端に押しやられた

　人々の存在に目を向けてきた吉永の原点とも言えるものです。愛情を持って対峙するように

　写された彼らのクローズアップは、写真集を観た森山大道氏が、それぞれの被写体に大胆に

　真正面から見据える吉永の真摯な視点に感銘を受けたと言われています。

 

　実は2000年に、写真集の出版を記念した大規模な展覧会が渋谷と名古屋のパルコで開催され

　ました。残念ながら大阪の心斎橋パルコはギャラリースペースが閉鎖されましたので、大阪

　での展示は実現する事なく現在に至っております。パルコの巨大な空間とは違いますが、８

　平方メートルあまりのGALLERY ZEROのスペースに凝縮させた吉永マサユキの原点を、こ

　こ大阪の地で初めて開催させて頂くと共に、吉永の強靭で愛おしい世界観をお楽しみ頂きた

　いと思っております。何卒よろしくお願い申し上げます。

 

 

 

　Masayuki Yoshinaga is known for photographs such as the "Bosozoku (Japanese teen 　motorcycle gangs)" series photographed over 8 years and cosplay teenagers called 　"Goth-Loli (Gothic and Lolita).” A large number of them were exhibited in various

　museums and spaces including Mori Art Museum and Yokohama Museum of Art in

　Japan, ICP in New York and the Barbican Gallery in London. This exhibition,

　Yoshinaga’s first solo exhibition in this gallery, will display works from his photo book 　titled "For These Naked Apologies" published in 2000, which depicted the people of

　Yoshinaga’s home town, Juso in Osaka.

 

　Portraying a variety of people including bartenders, blue-color workers, drag queens

　and bad boys, the photographs in "For These Naked Apologies" are the fundamental

　works for Yoshinaga who turns his attention to marginalized people in Japanese

　society. Those close-up portraits look as if they were taken to face each other

　affectionately. It is said that Daido Moriyama was very impressed with Yoshinaga’s

　straight and sincere stance when he saw the book.

 

　In 2000, large-scale exhibitions celebrating the publication of "For These Naked

　Apologies” were held at Shibuya Parco and Nagoya Parco. Although the exhibition

　was supposed to travel to Osaka Parco, as the gallery in Osaka Parco was closed, the

　exhibition was not realized. Unlike Parco’s huge space, we will become compacted the

　exhibition in the 8-square-meter space of Gallery Zero and present it for the first time

　in Osaka. We hope you will enjoy Yoshinaga’s strong and loving views.
